West Town Wonder

Wicker Park is part of West Town, one of 77 officially designated Chicago community areas situated northwest of The Loop. The neighborhood is well known for its many commercial and entertainment establishments. It is also a highly convenient place to live for those who work downtown, as Wicker Park properties are within easy reach of public transportation stops. The nearby transportation options include the “El” (blue line) located at Damen and Milwaukee Avenues, and The Kennedy (the north/south highway known as I-90/94), which borders the area.

The community area of West Town is widely thought to be named after Western Avenue, which was Chicago’s western boundary at the time of West Town’s settlement. Today, West Town is flourishing with neighborhoods such as Wicker Park, Ukrainian Village, East Village, Noble Square, and River West.

Located south of Wicker Park properties is where you’ll find the neighborhood of Ukrainian Village. Although named for its high population of Ukrainians, Ukrainian Village attracts many other ethnicities as well. Prominent local landmarks in this neighborhood include the Roberto Clemente High School, St. Mary’s Hospital, St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral, and Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Cathedral. Recently, in 2002, part of the Ukrainian Village was designated a Chicago Landmark District.

Directly east of Ukrainian Village lies the neighborhood of East Village. Like Ukrainian Village, East Village has recently been designated a Chicago Landmark District in an effort to preserve its character as development in the area continues to grow.

To the east of East Village is the neighborhood of Noble Square. Oftentimes, the northern half of Noble Squire is referred to as Wicker Park Chicago real estate, while the southern end is increasingly identified as West Town. West Town’s River West neighborhood is situated east of The Kennedy (the highway that runs north/south and is known as I-90/94), east of Milwaukee Avenue between Hubbard and Augusta. River West is known for its large loft conversions, infill housing developments, and St. John Cantius Church.
