A Little Bucktown History

Bucktown received its name in the early 1800s, as a result of the large Polish population’s fondness for raising goats, the male of which is referred to as a buck. The term “Bucktown” was coined early in the area’s history, during the 1830s. Although the term faded away shortly after that time, it emerged again in the 1920s.

Bucktown’s history predates the 1833 incorporation of Chicago as a town. Several Polish immigrants migrated to America from their war torn homeland in 1831. Many of these immigrants were drawn directly to the Chicago area and settled in and around the suburb of Jefferson. Others chose an area bounded by Fullerton, Damen, Armitage, and Western, which later came to be known as Holstein.

By the 1840s, the area boasted its own post office and hotel. The hotel was named the Powell House, located at Milwaukee and Armitage. During the early winter of 1848, hundreds of German immigrants, including those from Schleswig-Holstein, arrived to Chicago. Many were severely malnourished from the long voyage. A gentleman by the name of Marcus Nobles, who worked with Archibald Clybourn, founder of the first meatpacking house near Elston and Armitage, provided these new immigrants with a plentiful supply of flour to help them to settle into the area. By 1854, the town of Holstein was established, and the entire area was annexed to the City of Chicago nearly ten years later, on February 13, 1863.

As time continued, there was a major influx of additional immigrants to the area, hailing from Russia, Poland, and other part of Europe during the 1960s. The Latin immigration brought a whole new culture to an already multi-ethnic area. By the 1970s, those seeking Bucktown MLS were unable to be classified into any one ethnic category, as the area truly became a melting pot. Many of these early settlers were drawn to the area for its wonderful amenities such as affordable housing, excellent transportation, and close proximity to The Loop and lakefront activities.

Historic remnants are still evident today in Bucktown, and include beautiful century-old buildings, cobblestone alleys, and old streetcar tracks.
